3 Top tips to keep you and your guests secure when using Airbnb

Hundreds of thousands of homes around the World are using Airbnb to host their properties to travellers looking for an easy way to see the world without the expensive cost of staying in hotels.

The rise of Airbnb has opened up so many more opportunities for travellers to see more of the world easily, live and experience places like a local and the chance to stay in unique properties such as a tree house in the Black Forest, a Mongolian Yurt on Lake Annecy or even a converted castle in Tuscany.

The properties to stay in and the places to visit are now even easier to experience as more hosts join the worlds largest bed and breakfast directory.

Travelling the world, living like a local and staying somewhere cheaply – sounds great yes?! Absolutely, now let’s think about how we are going to ensure your property stays secure and your guests feel safe because ultimately we want them to write a rave review for more guests to come and stay!

  1. Physical entry to the property

You have registered as a host, you have listed your property and created a wicked profile on Airbnb with some beautiful photos of the property. Now, there are some things you need to think about to ensure your property is secure and your guests feel safe.

What you don’t want is to create security that is too complicated and cumbersome, people want to come and go quickly and not have to think about too many tricky security features. So firstly think if you are going to meet and greet your guests and hand over the room or property to them on arrival, or if you will need to install a door entry system that your guests are provided with a code prior to their arrival.

A door entry system can easily be installed to both residential and commercial properties to include master and guest codes. These can be changed each time a new guest stays to provide a robust security for your property and an easy to manage system for you or your housekeeper to change and reissue codes.

2. External security lighting

Dependent on location of your property and the level of street lighting available, you may wish to introduce some security lighting to the external walls of your property to help your guests find their way, their keys or codes and help them feel secure.

Security lighting is a great crime deterrent, it is a proven tool to deter ‘tailgating’ into properties, bag theft and intimidation as the lighting makes the property much more visible and likely for any criminal wanting to be kept in the dark more likely to move on from brightly lit buildings and your guests.

3.  Intruder alarm

Although you probably wouldn’t want to use the alarm while you had guests staying to reduce the over-complicated security measures while they stayed with you, if the property wasn’t in constant use or you were away for long periods of time we would suggest introducing an intruder alarm to be set while the property was empty.

The alarm can be armed and disarmed easily from a mobile app that could be set once your guests had departed, giving you the peace of mind the property was secure.

Another great feature of introducing an intruder alarm to your property is that you can provide your housekeeper or regular cleaner with an access code for them to be there when they need to be and not disturb you for entry or reset the alarm on their exit.

1. Drones have become a vital security surveillance asset for not only the military and bomb squads but also farmers, landowners and business owners. With their improved, smaller and lighter mini-drone features, they can survey large buildings checking for disturbance or needed maintenance, monitor livestock and investigate crime scenes. So what can we expect for 2018? Well, the technology for these drones is exciting tech enthusiasts across the world, as tests are being carried out on a new Drone which uses images, GPS signal and AI (Artificial Intelligence) to fly autonomously!

As a security company, we are excited by these advances in technology and on behalf of our clients, we want to see these become more affordable for our business clients as they add a vital level of surveillance security. We really look forward to watching security drones become more accessible for businesses across the UK.

2. GPS (Global Positioning System) You might remember a time, when you wrote a note on the fridge to let family know where you were going to be or studying a map before starting your long journey. Well technology has certainly moved on and now GPS integrated in all our lives. It’s even helping keep our kids safe. From smartwatches, to luggage tags, from tracking your fun to finding your friends. GPS is being used to find and track you and your items every day.

There is also a serious safety element to GPS which helps people and the police retrieve stolen items. In 2018, exciting new advances in technology mean that in some mobile products we will be able to track your phone within 30cm of where it is, using clever smartphone technology. As a security company, keeping a track of your possessions whether personal or business assets is of the utmost importance to our customers, however would this particular new advance make some people take adverse risks to their personal safety, if they used this technology to track down and try and retrieve stolen items?

3. Video cameras are part of our daily lives, even children as young as 2 can navigate their way around an iPad to find the camera and video apps. We’ve seen a definite rise in videos becoming a widely recognised tool, in the fight against crime and bringing criminals to justice. Police are are using body cams to record real-time action on their watch, which can protect them and also assist them in court. With car insurance fraud on the rise, drivers are using dash-cams to record their journey in the hope of catching footage to support any claim, should they be involved in a road traffic accident or something more calculated.

Then there are GoPros, which are a fun, wearable action video which are great for filming yourself on the go. They can also help cyclists record their ride and capture any antisocial, driver behaviour they might encounter out on the road. Video camera technologies are being improved all the time. They are becoming accessible and affordable for the general public and make great presents for the kids, which is great news.

When it comes to home security, cctv image quality is just getting better and better. The cameras themselves are getting smaller and smarter, linking to clever apps and GPS, which allows you to monitor your home whilst you’re away. This is only going to get easier in 2018 and beyond.

Ones to watch out for in 2018 Keep your eyes out for new car smart theft technologies allowing to control your car access via a clever smart app.

Many more retailers this year will be able to offer contactless payments via card and mobile app and although these are revolutionising the way we make payments, there is an increase need to keep our cards and personal details safe.

Make it your resolution to keep your phone and cards safe in 2018 and maybe purchasing some of the readily available, blocking technologies and keeping on top of your personal security. The Police and other associations such as Action Fraud  offer some great advice to help keep you, your belongings and your personal data safe.
